The modified template Ivy bleeding time was evaluated as a test of in vivo platelet function in 79 selected patients with acquired and genetic platelet dysfunction. The bleeding time in 100 normal subjects averaged 4.5 minutes ± 1.7 (± 1 SD). In studies with aspirin, phenylbutazone, paraproteinemia, uremia, and von Willebrand's disease, prolongation of the bleeding time was both a more sensitive and reproducible test than a battery of in vitro function tests that included collagen adhesion; aggregation with adenosine diphosphate, adrenalin, collagen, thrombin; glass bead retention; platelet factor 3 (phospholipid); and clot retraction.
