Acute experimental head injury produced by supratentorial balloon compression of the brain was performed on 30 Rhesus monkeys to evaluate the effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in relation to urea. Epidural hematoma was simulated by compressing the brain with an extradural balloon slowly inflated for a period of 3 hours. Animals were divided into three groups, S, U, and D, of 10 each. "S" group received 20 ml of physiologic saline at the critical "end point" of compression, defined as a period of apnea lasting no less than 45 sec. "U" group was treated with 3.2 g urea in a
