Perhaps the internist should restrain a feeling of unbridled enthusiasm in commenting on a guide for the "clinical surgeon and surgical resident," but this would hardly be appropriate for the Manual of Preoperative and Postoperative Care. Broad in scope, physiological in orientation, and practical in approach, this compendium by the Committee on Pre- and Postoperative Care, American College of Surgeons, serves as a bridge where the internist and surgeon may well come together.
