A simple and rapid method for evaluating the cellular and noncellular constituents of sputum is outlined. Cytologic evaluation of sputum should be an integral part of the study of all pulmonary patients. This can be accomplished with a simple microscope in the physician's office, without using a special stain. The distinction between eosinophilic and neutrophilic sputum is clinically important.
