The increasing use of autos, bullets, and knives; the rapid transportation of victims to the operating room; and the expanded methods of cardiovascular surgeons all combine to heighten our interest in traumatic injuries of the heart and great vessels. Constrained by the time limits imposed by massive arterial blood loss and pericardial tamponade, the physician, angiographer, and surgeon must start vital therapy speedily.
