Short, informative résumés, about 10 pages each, on the current status of 16 major areas of cardiac surgery and related subjects are exceedingly difficult to obtain. For the most part, the 20 contributors to this book have met this need.
There are five papers on the clinical use of instruments used for assisted circulation in shock and myocardial infarction, pacemaking, monitoring, automated patient care, and cardiopulmonary substitution during surgery. A plea to abandon the term "cardiogenic shock" is made without a suggestion for a meaningful substitute, nor a method for distinguishing shock from acute failure, such as by the patients'
