Rapid accumulation of immunological knowledge makes it difficult for any author to present "essential immunology" in a publication that is current, concise, and complete. Dr. Roitt has done this by translating a vast literature into a well-structured volume that summarizes current basic concepts and succinctly describes both classic experiments and immunological methods. Although he emphasizes "currently accepted truths," he is usually careful to point out alternative explanations for the existing data. Because he cites evidence for other mechanisms, as in the case of the short-circuiting of the complement sequence, the reader will not be confused when he subsequently learns of
