Texts in endocrinology, as in other disciplines, tend to be weighty, expensive, and multiauthored and are used mainly by those already proficient in the field. Dr. Catt's monograph, which originated as a series in The Lancet, is pocket-sized and inexpensive and will prove most useful to medical students, especially during their courses in physiology and biochemistry. Major emphasis is placed on mechanisms of hormone action and control of hormonal secretion. Relatively brief consideration is given to endocrinologic diseases or therapy, and physicians seeking answers to clinical problems will do much better with Williams or Duncan.
The style is impressive: terse,
