The rapid major cardiac surgical advances of the past twenty years have led to the establishment of an interdisciplinary subspecialty for the intensive care of the patient in the early postoperative period. To create a setting for the patient to receive maximum benefit of current knowledge, interactions are required between the surgeon, cardiologist or internist, anesthesiologist, clinical pharmacologist, respiratory therapist, and specially trained nurses and medical assistants. This group works together in the surgical intensive care unit as an interdisciplinary team rather than along the narrow conventional departmental lines.
