There is an obvious need for a single reference source containing both clinical and basic knowledge of the spinal cord. For the last decade the first edition of this book has been "the only game in town" in this field. The old text has been considerably revised, with new sections on the pharmacology of the spinal cord, the treatment of lesions of the cervical spine by the anterior approach, spinal cord edema, and percutaneous cervical cordotomy. These new sections are, in general, adequate, with the section by Cloward on surgery of the cervical spine being exceptionally good. The discussion of
