The medical profession, like all special units of society, sees criticism or intervention from without as a threat to its purposes; but certainly the public have a right to demand that their physicians maintain their professional excellence at all times.
We are internists because we have achieved a degree of excellence in professional skills. To continue to meet the justifiable expectations of the public, we must have within our professional lives a system of continuing education with potential for solid improvement of our skills. In support of excellence throughout our profession we must actively lead and participate in peer review
