Modes of living have changed. Urbanization, industrialization, resettlement schemes, westernization and detribalization have all combined to break down old, traditional norms and practices that governed the brewing and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Numerous concoctions have come onto the market. Isishimeyana, imfulamfula, intoyaphansi, 'Barberton', etc., are untraditional brews which are intended to ensure big returns at the shebeens. Their alcoholic content is not known. There is also a distillate gavini whose alcohol content is estimated at 85%. During the last war when petrol was rationed some motorists are said to have enjoyed several miles of extra driving using gavini. The beverages
