HOWARD HERZENBERG, M.D.
To the editor: Drs. Petersdorf and Beck (1) recently outlined a new procedure for evaluating the clinical competence of candidates for certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine. They stressed the need for periodic review of clinical competence by committees at the training institutions with feedback and discussion with the candidates. I endorse this new procedure and the Board's proper concern that all candidates for certification clearly demonstrate clinical competence in evaluating patients.
Regretably the almost total lack of feedback in the erasure section of the Board's recent Certifying Examination made it impossible for us to "practice" medicine competently.
