Research in hematology, having become enmeshed in molecular biology, appears at times to have only a tangential relation to clinical medicine. This divergence poses a problem in assembling a collection of review articles such as those in this volume. It is difficult to find a thread of interest that joins all or even most of these contributions.
If the reader is patient-oriented, articles such as "Inhibition of Cancer Cell Stickiness," "RNA Metabolism of the Acute Lymphocytic Leukemic Cell," and "Recent Advances in Thalassemias" do provide a potential bridge between new laboratory findings and the understanding of certain diseases. In the
