To the editor: Dr. Beck's defense of the clinical competence or "erasure" part of the ABIM Certifying Examination (1) is oblique as well as overenthusiastic.
Dr. Herzenberg, in his letter, takes specific exception to that part of the examination and requests at least a breakdown of grades by examination section, not by subspecialty. Dr. Beck's reply consists of two points: that the number of test items within a given subspecialty area may be statistically insignificant (this may be so but it is irrelevant to Dr. Herzenberg's argument and request) and that additional expense would be incurred by providing such data,
