Reviewers generally strive to give unbiased opinions. At the outset, however, I must state that because my wartime association with Dr. Middleton was so rewarding, I confess a bias in his favor and cherish the opportunity to review this collection of his essays. As the Chief Medical Officer of the European Theater from 1942 to 1945, Dr. Middleton often visited the Fifth General Hospital in which I served as a ward officer. On such visits he quickly covered the routine military items of his inspection with the commanding officer and then said, "I want to see patients with your staff."
