Scholarly people from several countries participated in this 1970 symposium on drug abuse. The book that resulted is, by and large, scholarly. But like most published symposia it is discursive, uneven, redundant, and numbingly eclectic.
The book is intended for "practicing physicians," but from its bulk and range it surely is not intended for physicians who practice very much. The topics range from epistemology to analytical chemistry to comparative law, with large chunks devoted to drug scenes in Sweden, Japan, and elsewhere. The busy physician may find even the clinical sections turgid and time-consuming.
