In recent years information on the basic inflammatory processes has accumulated at an exceptionally rapid pace, and, therefore, those who are not directly involved in the evolution of these data are often unable to get a perspective on the new facts that permits their maximum clinical application. This is nowhere better illustrated than in the field of leukocyte movement, where concepts have evolved from the relatively basic idea of "chemotaxis" to that of the highly complex interaction of cellular and humoral factors involved in various types of cell movement.
