To the editor: I am greatly concerned about the possibility that the editorial note, "Sickle-Cell Trait: Benign or Malignant?" (Ann Intern Med 77:997-999, 1972), might transmit the message that the sickle-cell trait is definitely a risk to health and perhaps even a risk to life. Anecdotal reports on thrombotic phenomena are quoted in this editorial note without any critical review of the cited papers or at least with the consideration of the possibility that the association may be accidental. The authors speak about "the morbidity and lethality associated with hemoglobin AS" as if an increased morbidity and lethality had actually
