This symposium is a compilation of articles dealing with recent progress in atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. Some of the articles are brief reviews; others are summaries or detailed accounts of original investigations. Seventy-nine contributors cover almost every aspect of coronary heart disease. Pathogenesis, pathology, and pathophysiology of coronary atherosclerosis, and diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of angina and myocardial infarction are discussed. It is not possible to evaluate individually the merits or short-comings of each contribution.
Considerable emphasis is placed on pathophysiology and the formation of atheroma. The roles of plasma lipids, coronary flows, local thrombosis, and heredity are explored.
