Like maimonides, whose medical aphorisms he recently translated, Dr. Fred Rosner has written a study of medicine and Jewish law. Many familiar current topics in medical ethics are presented: contraception, abortion, euthanasia, organ transplants, suicide, artificial insemination, and the definition of death. A few issues, such as the violent Israeli confrontation over routine autopsies, may be new to some readers.
Each selection applies the traditions of Biblical and orthodox rabbinic law (halakha) to the ethical situations encountered in current medical practice. The discussions present a clear outline of differing traditional interpretations without attempting to judge among them. Many of the
