The first edition of Cardiac Surgery, in 1967, became one of the leading compilations of information in the field. Now 100 more pages have been added, with 18 new contributors replacing 20 of the original 56. The 34 chapters are divided into 7 sections, the first section being a historical review. Section II presents treatises on the physiology of cardiac surgery and ten technical considerations, including the role of the blood bank, anesthesia, aspects of cardiopulmonary bypass, hyperbaric oxygenation, and treatment of cardiac arrest.
