The biology of connective tissue has advanced much with the definition of molecular structures such as that of collagen and the proteoglycans, but there is still more to learn in this field than in most others. Least is known about the spine. Recent studies of its diseases have shown how its peculiar blend of rigidity and mobility is compromised by various processes, ranging from metabolic derangements (neoplastic, hereditary, or acquired) through degenerative processes to inflammatory diseases of largely unknown origin. Such syndromes as relapsing polychondritis and ankylosing spondylitis have widespread systemic manifestations, but the major problems seem to involve the
