Practical payoffs from the intensive investment in research in the basic biological sciences of the past two decades are now giving promise of a renaissance in medicine. Some of the genetic factors responsible for even some of the commoner diseases are beginning to be identified. Prenatal diagnosis of a rapidly increasing number of serious hereditary diseases is now in operation at several centers. New approaches to the correction of some of the hereditary biochemical abnormalities are now possible through administration of specific co-factor precursors or reaction products. Other approaches being explored include enzyme and even gene replacement.
