Plasma vitamin A concentrations are widely used to screen for malabsorption. Isolation and characterization of the proteins responsible for plasma vitamin A transport in man—retinol-binding protein and prealbumin—has made it possible to explore the regulation of plasma vitamin A concentration in patients with impaired absorption. Concentrations of retinol-binding protein and prealbumin were measured by immunoassays in 22 adults with malabsorption (postgastrectomy, 5; chronic pancreatitis, 3; celiac sprue, 5; tropical sprue, 4; Zollinger - Ellison syndrome, 2; regional iletis, 1; postileal resection, 2) who had normal hepatic and renal function.
