Androgens increase renal but not extrarenal erythropoietin production in mice. They also increase erythropoiesis in patients undergoing hemodialysis. This study compares the effects of androgens on erythropoiesis and erythropoietin levels in anephric patients and those with kidneys. Twelve male patients undergoing hemodialysis were studied; six had kidneys and six were anephric. AU were observed for 2 months before, 3 months during, and 2 months after androgen therapy (testosterone propionate, 150 mg intramuscularly, twice weekly). Hemoglobin and hematocrit levels and plasma erythropoietin titers were determined once a week. Erythropoietin was assayed in polycythemic mice. All six anephric patients had pretherapy hematocrits
