In a patient with scleroderma and renal failure, peritoneal clearances of urea and creatinine were well below those values usually seen in patients with renal disease but without systemic vascular disease. Peritoneal clearance values increased significantly with the intraperitoneal administration of isoproterenol and subsequently decreased after withdrawal of the drug. These data suggest that reduced peritoneal clearances can be associated with the sclerodermatous process and may be improved by the use of vasodilator drugs. Abnormalities similar to those reported for the cutaneous microvasculature may also develop in the visceral circulation in patients with scleroderma.
