To the editor: Drs. Marks and Sachar's article, "Undertreatment of Medical Inpatients with Narcotic Analgesics" (Ann Intern Med 78:173-181, 1973), focuses attention on a serious and generally unappreciated phenomenon. But they, as well as Dr. Sapira in his thoughtful editorial, have missed a major point by focusing on the physicians' inadequate pharmacologic knowledge rather than on his humanitarian orientation. More important is the generally inadequate sensitivity of those in the healing professions to human suffering and pain.
To support my contention I pose two questions. If the problem was largely pharmacologic misinformation and if the house officers were indeed adequately
