Our data show that the principal symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome are present in a number of diverse cultural groups, though the frequency and severity of symptoms show considerable variation among cultural groups. A few specific symptoms show a marked variation. The basis for this is not apparent in our present study. Symptoms suggestive of premenstrual distress appear to cross species as well as cultural lines occurring in several species of primates.
