A more complete and current collection of information, theory, and speculation on streptococcal biology probably does not exist "under one roof anywhere in the English technical literature. The 65 contributors have produced concise, complete, and stimulating essays on the biological properties of the streptococcus, the pathogenesis of Group A streptococcal diseases (as well as those caused by Groups B, C, and D), methods of identification of the streptococci, and the socioeconomic impact of rheumatic fever.
