In the summer of 1971 the Second International Symposium of the Cardiovascular Research Institute of Milan took up the intriguing topic that forms the title of this volume. Twenty-seven invited papers from distinguished researchers in the field are presented, together with the transcripts of four discussion periods. These papers range from detailed reviews of a particular research area or program to short reports of ongoing research.
Two main areas are covered: cardiovascular physiology, including central and peripheral mechanisms of control, both in the normal and diseased heart, and the findings of the descriptive and experimental behavioral sciences that are relevant
