This timely résumé moves smoothly through the history, chemistry, physicochemistry, methodology, physiology, and toxicology of bile salts. Diseases in which bile salt abnormalities may be found are discussed, as are methods of altering bile acid metabolism.
In a field developing as rapidly as the bile salt field, this excellent monograph provides a most useful, coherent summary of the situation as it existed in 1972. Its pace is consistent, and areas from the physical chemistry to the clinical are handled adroitly. The bibliography is comprehensive, with 713 references, and there is a reasonable index.
