To the editor: We would like to remark on the comment to the Editor in the May issue (Ann Intern Med 78:779, 1973), by Hirsch, Levin, and Chien, related to our recent article (Ann Intern Med 78:243-246, 1973) concerning experience with idoxuridine in 29 cases of herpes simplex virus encephalitis studied by us from 1966 to 1971. We quote from the letter of Hirsch and colleagues: "little appears to be gained by further publication of uncontrolled studies or case reports of various modes of therapy in this disorder."
