Three generations in a kindred have been studied for identification of a chromosome structural rearrangement not previously described in man. Staining by G-banding methods identified the rearrangement as a truly reciprocal, balanced translocation involving chromosome pairs 1 and 2. This study shows the sensitivity of new staining methods in confirming a reciprocal exchange of genetic information and in identifying break-point regions on each chromosome.
