The prostaglandins, a family of closely related lipid substances, have received considerable attention lately because of their abortifacient and many potent pharmacological actions. Within the last 2 years, more than 2000 papers on this subject have been published. But until very recently, most physicians, ignoring the works of these investigators as "wild goose chases," thought prostaglandins were esoteric biological substances with limited or no potential clinical usefulness.
