The fourth edition again provides a concise, well-written, and logical description of how the lungs, kidneys, and the body's buffer systems cooperate in acid-base regulation. It is not intended to be an account of diseases associated with disturbances of acid-base regulation, their treatment, or of laboratory methods.
About one quarter of the 27 chapters have had important additions or alterations, which mainly concern the contribution of the kidney to acid-base regulation. Nineteen of the 111 references are new, but only 6 are from publications in the 1970s. Equivalents have been abandoned in favour of mols.
