To the editor: Dr. Frommeyer's excellent article entitled, "Recertification: A Status Report," in the September 1973 issue (Ann Intern Med 79:441-443) provided us with insight into the American Board of Internal Medicine's views of the need to develop a system for evaluating the internist's current professional capability. It also reemphasized the recognized deficiencies of the examination method for evaluating clinical competence.
Few could successfully argue that initial certification does not indicate completion of the basic educational program of the internist. Nor could they argue that there is no need to monitor one's continued competence and clinical abilities, so that the
