To the editor: I recently reread the commendable February 1973 article, "Undertreatment of Medical Inpatients With Narcotic Analgesics," by Marks and Sachar (Ann Intern Med 78:173-181, 1973), and once again found myself in agreement with the positions they took in their paper. Although their points speak for themselves, I have one or two observations to add that might be of some practical clinical importance in prescribing drugs for pain relief. We have become increasingly satisfied with the concept of administering analgesics on a scheduled rather than pro re nata basis in our pain patients and believe there are several advantages
