The determination of the mechanical properties of bone is a study that has attracted the interest of perhaps as diverse a group of researchers as any biomaterials topic. Bone can be regarded as a dynamic tissue in vivo and as a relatively stable structural material when observed in vitro. Starting from these two different points, a considerable body of information has been developed in the nearly 100 years since the pioneering studies of A. A. Raüber ushered in modern research on bone. Dr. Evans has performed a valuable service in bringing together much of the available data, including previously published
