For a single author today to write a good textbook of pathology must be a very difficult undertaking. The difficulties are compounded when the text also has to serve as a source of references—Nachschlagewerk—as is the case with the series of Spezielle pathologische Anatomie, edited by Professors W. Doerr, G. Seifert, and E. Uehlinger. In the sixth volume of this series, Professor Becker has undertaken the laborious task of reviewing the pathology of the exocrine pancreas (the islands of Langerhans are not included in this tome and will be dealt with elsewhere).
