The national center for Health Statistics recently estimated that 7 million persons are currently being treated for backache and that 2 million new cases will be added each year; thus, the importance of this problem is evident. In the preface, neurosurgeon Finneson proposes "to provide a practical and useful guide for evaluation and management of the various forms of low back dysfunction commonly encountered in practice." This aim is not fulfilled.
