If a second marriage, after an unhappy first one, represents the triumph of hope over experience (Samuel Johnson), then the second edition of an important textbook, as this one is, exemplifies just the reverse; thus, the addition of only 100 pages to the book's size after 6 explosively productive years in microbiologic research testifies to the potent editorial skills of Drs. Davis, Dulbecco, Eisen, and Ginsberg. One fifth of the book contains Eisen's superb review of recent information and important principles of immunology.
