To the editor: In 1968, Wajima and Kraus (1) reported low leukocyte alkaline phosphatase activity in sickle-cell anemia. This finding was unexpected, and therefore no explanation was offered by the authors. Our skepticism led us to repeat their study, and our results confirm the original observation.
Outpatients with sickle-cell anemia (SS) and sickle-cell trait (AS) attending the sickle-cell disease clinic of the Queens Hospital Center were studied. All had diagnoses of hemoglobinopathy, confirmed by hemoglobin electrophoresis. Healthy siblings and parents of patients with sickle-cell trait, all free of hemoglobinopathy, served as control subjects. Leukocyte alkaline phosphatase activity was determined semiquantitatively
