The first half of this somewhat overpriced volume is taken up by a chapter on secretin and cholecystokinin, written by the editors. The late J. Erik Jorpes and Viktor Mutt were responsible for isolating, purifying, and determining the structures of both these hormones. This first chapter historically traces the research in intestinal hormones in almost encyclopedic fashion. It does not provide an overview of the field, succinct summaries of specific topics, or expert opinion in areas of controversy, for conflicting results are presented side by side without editorial comment.
