To the editor: In the December 1973 issue (Ann Intern Med 79:917-924, 1973), Mr. Beatty discussed usage of medical library resources. I wish to emphasize some precautionary observations on using the two major National Library of Medicine indexing services, Index Medicus and the Medline/Compfile Computer System (MCCS). Both systems have their inherent problems. Ideally, the MCCS should result in a more comprehensive retrieval of articles. However, whereas the individual's usage of Index Medicus is dependent on his knowledge of his topic, the MCCS, when programmed by the research analyst, is dependent on the analyst's knowledge of the submitter's topic and
