To the editor: Palmer, Nelson, and Bacchus (Ann Intern Med 80:200-204, 1974) have added a "new" test, the chloride: phosphate (C1:P) ratio, to the multitude of indirect tests used in the analysis of hypercalcemia. An extensive review of the literature (1) on these tests, most of which depend on the effects of parathormone on renal phosphate handling, led to the conclusion that none of the tests were more helpful than repeated serum calcium and phosphate tests. When one analyzes the data presented by Palmer and colleagues, there seems to be little to warrant the introduction of an additional indirect variable
