To the editor: Dr. David Sonneborn's description of thrombocytopenia in adult iron deficiency anemia (Ann Intern Med 80:111, 1974) prompts us to describe an additional case of particular importance.
A woman was hospitalized for anemia and thrombocytopenia. When a cholecystectomy was performed in 1968, a nodular cirrhosis was found. Since then she has required four additional hospitalizations for recurrent ascites, hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. There is no history of alcohol ingestion. On 25 February 1974, she was a chronically ill middle-aged woman with pale mucous membranes. The sclerae were white, the neck veins were not distended, and there was a
