The reader is rewarded in the end with a good deal of information about the selection of suitable cases for one or another kind of treatment of one or another kind of pain from one or another cause. The author's concern and compassion come through clearly and are infectious. His experience is evident as well, and quite possibly the major value in this for his student will be a new appreciation of the variety of therapeutic approaches available for the patient with pain.
I felt there are major defects in the book, however. The chapters on anatomy and physiology of
