For all those investigators interested in the role of the monocyte in health and in disease, a remarkable treatise has been produced by Drs. Kass and Schnitzer. The authors provide an excellent and concise historical review of the theories of the origin of the monocyte and its relation to the committed bone-marrow stem cell and to phagocytes or histiocytes. The book is well referenced and current through 1971. There are numerous photomicrographs, including many electron micrographs of normal and leukemic monocytes. Several color photographs of historical interest and artist's sketches by the senior author are of exceptional quality.
