The practice of artificial insemination by a donor (A.I.D.) and the attempt to develop methods for human embryo transfer have raised fundamental questions about the social, versus the genetic, meaning of paternity, maternity, and marriage. The physician's duties and liabilities in these areas remain in a legally nebulous state.
